Bollywood
India’s Hindi-language movie industry based in Mumbai.
Bollywood is the nickname for India's Hindi-language film industry, based in Mumbai (formerly called Bombay, which is where the “B” in Bollywood comes from). It's one of the largest movie industries in the world, producing hundreds of films every year.
Bollywood movies are famous for their distinctive style: they typically run two to three hours long and blend multiple genres together in ways American movies rarely do. A single film might combine action, comedy, romance, and drama, often featuring elaborate song-and-dance numbers where characters suddenly break into choreographed performances. These musical sequences often help tell the story and reveal characters' feelings through music and dance.
The plots frequently follow certain beloved patterns: families facing challenges together, romantic couples overcoming obstacles to be together, or heroes fighting injustice. The movies are often optimistic and family-friendly, emphasizing values like family loyalty, hard work, and the triumph of good over evil.
Bollywood stars are enormously famous across India and in countries with large Indian populations. Some actors become so popular that fans call them by affectionate nicknames and follow their careers for decades. While Hollywood is the biggest film industry in the United States, Bollywood films reach huge audiences worldwide, making it a truly global entertainment force with its own unique style and sensibility.
