California
A large, populous state on the west coast of the U.S.
California is the most populous state in the United States, home to almost 40 million people. Located on the Pacific coast in the southwestern part of the country, California stretches from the Mexican border in the south to Oregon in the north. It's known for its remarkable diversity: in a single day, you could swim in the ocean, hike through giant sequoia forests, and climb snow-covered mountains.
California became the 31st state in 1850, shortly after the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill sparked the famous Gold Rush of 1849. Thousands of people, called forty-niners, rushed west hoping to strike it rich. While most didn't find gold, many stayed and built cities, farms, and businesses that helped California grow rapidly.
Today, California is famous for many things: Hollywood and the entertainment industry, Silicon Valley and technology companies, beautiful beaches and national parks like Yosemite, and agricultural production (it grows more fruits, vegetables, and nuts than any other state). Major cities include Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and the capital, Sacramento.
