Canada
A large country in North America north of the United States.
Canada is the second-largest country in the world by area, covering most of the northern part of North America. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and up to the Arctic Ocean, sharing the world's longest border with the United States to the south.
Canada has ten provinces and three territories, with its capital in Ottawa. The country is officially bilingual, meaning both English and French are recognized as official languages. This reflects Canada's history: it was colonized by both the British and the French, and the province of Quebec maintains a strong French-speaking culture today.
The country is known for its vast wilderness, including enormous forests, thousands of lakes, and the Rocky Mountains. Much of northern Canada lies in the Arctic, where winters are extremely cold and dark. Despite its huge size, most Canadians live within 100 miles of the US border, where the climate is milder.
Canada is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy. While it has its own government, the British monarch remains the formal head of state, represented by the Governor General. The country became a self-governing dominion in 1867 through a peaceful process and later gained full control over its own laws, while maintaining ties to Britain through the Commonwealth.
Canadians are sometimes stereotyped as exceptionally polite, and the country is famous for hockey, maple syrup, and its distinctive red and white flag featuring a maple leaf.
