Egypt
A country in northeast Africa known for its ancient pyramids.
Egypt is a country in the northeast corner of Africa, famous for its ancient civilization that flourished along the Nile River for thousands of years. When most people think of Egypt, they picture the pyramids at Giza, massive stone structures built as tombs for pharaohs (ancient Egyptian kings) more than 4,500 years ago.
Ancient Egypt was one of history's most advanced civilizations. The Egyptians invented a form of writing called hieroglyphs, created incredible architecture and art, developed sophisticated mathematics and medicine, and built a society that lasted longer than almost any other in human history. They preserved their dead through mummification because they believed in an afterlife, and archaeologists continue discovering treasures in Egyptian tombs today.
Modern Egypt remains culturally important, with its capital, Cairo, being one of Africa's largest cities. The Nile River still runs through the country, providing water for farming in an otherwise desert landscape, just as it did in ancient times. Egypt connects Africa to the Middle East and controls the Suez Canal, a crucial waterway for global shipping.
When you hear someone described as an Egyptologist, that's a scientist who studies ancient Egyptian history, language, and culture. The civilization's achievements in engineering, art, and government influenced cultures around the Mediterranean and continue to fascinate people worldwide.
