French
From France, or the language spoken in France.
French refers to things connected to France, a country in Western Europe known for its art, food, fashion, and history. When something is French, it comes from or relates to France: French bread, French architecture, French culture.
The French language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used not only in France but also in parts of Canada, Africa, the Caribbean, and other regions where France once had colonies. Learning French opens doors to reading classic literature by authors like Jules Verne and Alexandre Dumas, or understanding lyrics to songs and dialogue in films from French-speaking countries.
French cuisine has influenced cooking worldwide. When you see croissants, crêpes, or soufflés on a menu, you're encountering French culinary traditions. French techniques like sautéing and braising are fundamental skills taught in cooking schools everywhere.
The phrase “excuse my French” is an old-fashioned, humorous way people sometimes apologize before using a rude word, though it has nothing to do with the actual French language.
France has contributed enormously to world history, from the French Revolution's ideals of liberty and equality to French scientists like Louis Pasteur and Marie Curie, whose discoveries changed medicine and physics.
