Hindi
A major language of India spoken by many people.
Hindi is one of the major languages of India and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with over half a billion speakers. It's written in a beautiful script called Devanagari, which looks quite different from the Roman alphabet used for English. The script flows from left to right and has graceful curving lines that connect the letters along the top.
Hindi developed in northern India and is closely related to Urdu, another major South Asian language. In fact, spoken Hindi and Urdu are so similar that speakers can usually understand each other, though they use different writing systems. Hindi has also contributed many words to English, like bungalow, jungle, shampoo, and pajamas.
Today, Hindi is one of India's official languages and serves as a bridge language across the country, where hundreds of different languages are spoken. It's used in Bollywood films (India's famous movie industry), government, education, and daily life across much of India. Learning Hindi opens doors to understanding Indian culture, literature, and the lives of many people in South Asia.
