Hinduism
A major ancient religion from India with many gods and beliefs.
Hinduism is one of the world's oldest religions, practiced mainly in India and Nepal by over a billion people. Unlike religions with a single founder or holy book, Hinduism developed over thousands of years from many different traditions, stories, and ideas about how to live a good life and understand the universe.
Hindus believe in countless gods and goddesses, though many see them as different forms of one ultimate reality called Brahman. Popular deities include Vishnu (the preserver), Shiva (the destroyer and creator), and Ganesha (the elephant-headed god of new beginnings). Hindus also believe in karma, the idea that your actions have consequences, and reincarnation, meaning the soul is reborn into new lives based on how you lived before.
Hindu practice varies enormously from family to family and region to region. Some Hindus worship at home, some visit ornate temples, some practice yoga and meditation, and many celebrate colorful festivals like Diwali (the festival of lights). Sacred texts include the ancient Vedas and popular stories like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which teach lessons through adventures of gods and heroes.
