India

A large, diverse country in South Asia.

India is a vast country in South Asia, home to more than 1.4 billion people (more than any other nation). It stretches from the towering Himalayan mountains in the north to tropical beaches in the south, and from deserts in the west to dense jungles in the east.

India has one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations, with a history reaching back more than 4,000 years. Ancient Indians made remarkable contributions to mathematics: they helped develop the concept of zero and the number system we use today (often calledArabic numerals,” though they were greatly advanced in India). Indian mathematicians, astronomers, and philosophers created works that influenced cultures across Asia, the Middle East, and eventually Europe.

The country is known for its incredible diversity. People speak hundreds of different languages (though Hindi and English are widely used), practice different religions (including Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism, Christianity, and others), and maintain distinct regional cultures with their own foods, festivals, and traditions. Indian cuisine, with its complex use of spices like turmeric, cumin, and cardamom, has become popular worldwide.

India was ruled by Britain from the mid-1800s until 1947, when it gained independence through a movement led in large part by Mahatma Gandhi, who advocated for nonviolent resistance. Today, India is the world's largest democracy and has a rapidly growing economy, known especially for its technology industry and film industry (nicknamedBollywood”).
