January
The first month of the year, with 31 days.
January is the first month of the year, with 31 days. When January arrives, we flip our calendars to a fresh start and often think about new goals or resolutions for the year ahead.
The month gets its name from Janus, the ancient Roman god of beginnings and doorways. Janus was depicted with two faces: one looking back at the past and one looking forward to the future. This made him the perfect namesake for the month that bridges the old year and the new.
In much of the Northern Hemisphere, January brings the coldest weather of winter. Schools return from winter break, snow blankets many regions, and people bundle up in heavy coats. Meanwhile, in the Southern Hemisphere, January means summer warmth and long, sunny days.
January often feels like a time of possibility. Students start new semesters, adults return to work with new energy, and families recover from the busy holidays. The month's crisp, clean feeling matches its position as the gateway to everything the new year might bring.
