Korean
From Korea, or a person or language of Korea.
Korean refers to anything related to Korea, a peninsula in East Asia that is now divided into two countries: South Korea and North Korea. When we talk about Korean culture, Korean food, or the Korean language, we're usually referring to traditions and practices shared by people from both countries, though they've developed differently since the split in the mid-1900s.
The Korean language uses its own unique alphabet called Hangul, which was created in the 1400s during the reign of King Sejong the Great specifically to help regular people learn to read and write. Before that, Koreans used Chinese characters, which were much harder to learn. Korean food is known for bold, spicy flavors: dishes like kimchi (fermented vegetables), bibimbap (mixed rice with vegetables), and bulgogi (marinated beef) have become popular around the world.
Korea has a rich history stretching back thousands of years, with major contributions to art, science, and technology. Today, South Korea is known for its advanced technology, pop music (K-pop), and entertainment, while North Korea is a closed, tightly controlled country with limited contact with the outside world. When people say they're learning Korean, studying Korean history, or enjoying Korean barbecue, they're connecting with a culture that has shaped and influenced much of East Asia.
A Korean person is someone from Korea or of Korean descent, and there are Korean communities all over the world.
