Mexican
A person or thing from Mexico, or related to its culture.
Mexican means relating to Mexico, the large country directly south of the United States, or to its people and culture. A Mexican citizen is someone from Mexico, just as an American citizen is someone from the United States.
Mexico has a rich history stretching back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations like the Maya and Aztec built impressive cities, developed sophisticated mathematics and astronomy, and created detailed writing systems. Today's Mexico blends these ancient traditions with Spanish influences that arrived in the 1500s, creating a unique culture known worldwide for its music, art, food, and celebrations.
When we talk about Mexican food, we might mean tacos, enchiladas, or tamales. Mexican music includes mariachi bands and traditional folk songs. Mexican art includes the colorful paintings of artists like Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a beautiful Mexican tradition where families remember loved ones who have died, decorating altars with flowers, photos, and favorite foods.
As an adjective, Mexican describes anything connected to Mexico: Mexican history, Mexican Spanish (which sounds different from Spanish spoken in Spain), or Mexican architecture. As a noun, a Mexican is a person from Mexico. Many Americans have Mexican heritage, meaning their families originally came from Mexico, and they may celebrate both American and Mexican traditions.
