October
The tenth month of the year, in the middle of autumn.
October is the tenth month of the year, falling between September and November. In most of the Northern Hemisphere, October marks the heart of autumn, when leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold before falling from the trees. The air grows crisp and cool, and farmers harvest the last of their crops before winter arrives.
The month takes its name from the Latin word octo, meaning eight, because October was actually the eighth month in the ancient Roman calendar. When the Romans added January and February to the beginning of their calendar over 2,000 years ago, October became the tenth month, but kept its old name.
October holds several well-known holidays and traditions. Many Americans celebrate Halloween on October 31, when children dress in costumes and go trick-or-treating. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in October (Americans celebrate it in November). In many places, October weekends mean football games, apple picking, corn mazes, and pumpkin patches.
For students, October often feels like the school year is truly underway. The excitement of September has settled into regular routines, and the year stretches ahead with promise. The changing leaves and cooler weather make October a favorite month for many people.
