Surrealism is an art movement that combines realistic images in strange, dreamlike ways that could never happen in real life. A surrealist painting might show melting clocks draped over tree branches, or a businessman with an apple floating in front of his face, or elephants walking on impossibly long spider legs. These images are painted realistically, but they're arranged in ways that feel like a vivid dream where normal rules don't apply.

The movement started in the 1920s when artists like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte wanted to explore the mysterious, illogical world of dreams and the unconscious mind. They believed that combining familiar objects in impossible ways could reveal hidden truths about human thoughts and feelings. A surrealist might paint a train coming out of a fireplace, or trees with doors in them, creating scenes that make you stop and wonder what they mean.

Today, surrealism influences movies, advertisements, and video games. When you see an animated film where characters walk through impossible spaces or encounter bizarre combinations of things, you're seeing surrealism at work.
