ability
The skill or power to do something well.
Ability is what you're capable of doing, the skills and talents you possess that let you accomplish something. Your ability to read these words, solve a math problem, or kick a soccer ball all represent different abilities you've developed.
Some abilities come naturally. A person with natural musical ability might pick up instruments quickly and play melodies by ear. Other abilities develop through practice and effort. Nobody starts with the ability to do long division or speak French, but with work, most people can learn these skills.
The word often appears with “to” plus a verb: the ability to think clearly under pressure, the ability to make friends easily, or the ability to fix a broken bicycle. Notice how ability is about potential, what you can do when needed, and what you can reliably perform whenever the situation calls for it. If you have the ability to swim, you can do it whenever necessary, whether that's at the pool, at the beach, or in an emergency.
People sometimes confuse ability with performance. Having the ability to do something doesn't mean you'll always do it perfectly. A student with strong writing ability might still turn in a rushed, mediocre essay. True ability shows up consistently when you apply yourself.
