accusation
A claim that someone did something wrong or bad.
An accusation is a claim that someone has done something wrong or broken a rule. When you make an accusation, you're stating that you believe a specific person is guilty of something, like when a student accuses a classmate of stealing their pencil or when a teacher accuses someone of not doing their own homework.
Accusations can be true or false. A false accusation happens when someone blames an innocent person, which can cause serious harm to that person's reputation and feelings. Because of this, making accusations requires care and honesty, and it's important to have good reasons before claiming someone did something wrong.
In courts, a prosecutor makes formal accusations called charges against someone accused of breaking the law. The person facing these accusations is called the accused.
People sometimes confuse accusations with proof, but they're different. An accusation is just the claim itself. Proving the accusation requires evidence. If your sister accuses you of eating the last cookie, she still needs to show evidence, like crumbs on your shirt or chocolate on your face, to prove it!
