acreage
The total amount of land measured in acres.
Acreage is the total amount of land measured in acres. An acre is a unit for measuring land area, equal to about 90% of an American football field (including the end zones). When a farmer talks about their acreage, they mean how many acres of land they own or farm.
The word often appears in real estate listings and farm reports. A small house might sit on half an acre, while a large farm might have hundreds or thousands of acres. A rancher with significant acreage has enough land to graze cattle across wide-open spaces. A developer buying acreage might plan to build new homes or a shopping center.
You'll also hear acreage used to describe any large piece of land, even without knowing the exact measurement. Someone might say “they bought some acreage in the country” to mean they purchased a substantial plot of rural land. The word carries a sense of space and possibility: having acreage means having room to spread out, whether for growing crops, raising animals, building, or simply enjoying the outdoors.
