advertiser
A person or company that pays to promote something publicly.
An advertiser is a person or company that pays to promote their products, services, or ideas to the public. When you see a commercial during your favorite TV show, an ad before a YouTube video, or a billboard along the highway, an advertiser created and paid for that message, hoping you'll notice what they're selling.
Advertisers work hard to grab your attention and make their products memorable. A toy company advertising a new game might show kids having fun playing it. A cereal company might advertise how healthy and delicious their breakfast is. Political candidates advertise their campaigns to win votes.
The advertiser's goal is usually to persuade you to buy something, support something, or think differently about something. They might use catchy jingles, funny jokes, celebrity endorsements, or colorful images. Companies spend billions of dollars each year on advertising because it works: people buy products they've seen advertised.
Understanding how advertisers work helps you think critically about the messages around you. When you see an ad claiming something is “the best” or “everyone loves it,” you can ask yourself: is the advertiser showing me the whole truth, or just the parts that make their product look good?
