affection
A warm, caring feeling that makes you want closeness.
Affection is a warm, tender feeling toward someone you care about. When you show affection, you might hug your parent, ruffle your little brother's hair, or pat your friend on the back after they score a goal. Affection is that comfortable, caring feeling that makes you want to be close to certain people.
You can feel affection for family members, close friends, pets, or even favorite teachers who've helped you grow. It's gentler than the wild excitement of winning a game, but deeper than just liking someone. When your dog wags its tail and nuzzles against you, that's a show of affection. When your grandmother kisses your forehead, that's affection too.
The word affectionate describes someone who naturally shows these warm feelings. An affectionate person isn't afraid to give hugs, hold hands, or say kind things to people they care about. Some families are very affectionate, with lots of hugs and “I love yous.” Others show affection more quietly, through acts of kindness or spending time together. Both styles are genuine ways of expressing care and connection.
