When you have an affinity for animals, you feel drawn to them and comfortable around them in a way that feels effortless and right. Some people have an affinity for mathematics and find themselves enjoying problems that others struggle with. A student with an affinity for storytelling might spend hours writing tales while their friends would rather play basketball.

The word suggests something deeper than just preference. You might prefer vanilla ice cream over chocolate, but that's not an affinity. An affinity is more like how certain people have a natural feel for music, seeming to understand rhythm and melody almost instinctively. Or how some students have an affinity for learning languages, picking up new words and grammar patterns with surprising ease.
