affirmation
A strong, positive statement that says something is true.
An affirmation is a positive statement that declares something to be true. When you make an affirmation, you're stating clearly and confidently that you believe in something or that something is real.
In everyday life, affirmations often take the form of encouraging statements people tell themselves: “I can handle this challenge” or “I'm getting better at math every day.” Athletes might use affirmations before competitions, musicians before performances, and students before difficult tests. The idea is that stating something positive can help you believe it and work toward making it true.
The word also has a formal meaning in law and ceremony. When someone takes office or testifies in court, they might make an affirmation instead of an oath, which is a solemn declaration that they'll tell the truth or fulfill their duties. This type of affirmation is a serious promise.
You can also affirm something by agreeing with it or supporting it. When a friend shares an idea and you affirm their thinking, you're validating that their thoughts make sense. To affirm is to say yes, to confirm, or to express support for something being true or worthwhile.
