afraid
Feeling scared or worried that something bad might happen.
To be afraid means to feel fear or worry that something bad might happen. When you're afraid of the dark, your mind imagines dangers lurking in shadows. When you're afraid of failing a test, you worry about the consequences of not doing well.
Fear is a natural emotion that helps protect us from real dangers. Being afraid of a speeding car keeps you from stepping into traffic. Being afraid of a growling dog teaches caution. But sometimes we feel afraid of things that aren't actually dangerous, like being afraid to raise your hand in class even though the worst that could happen is getting an answer wrong.
People often say “don't be afraid” to encourage someone who's nervous about trying something new. A friend might be afraid to audition for the school play, afraid of forgetting their lines or being judged. The fear feels real even when the actual risk is small.
Afraid can also mean being reluctant or sorry about something: “I'm afraid we're out of time” means the speaker is sorry to deliver that news.
