agreement
A shared decision or understanding that people accept together.
An agreement is when two or more people come to the same understanding about something and decide to act on it together. When you and your friend make an agreement to meet at the park after school, you've both decided on the same plan. When your parents reach an agreement about where to go for vacation, they've talked it through and found something they both accept.
Agreements can be simple, like agreeing on which movie to watch, or complex, like the treaties that end wars between nations. Some agreements are formal and written down: when someone signs a contract to buy a house, that's a legal agreement that courts can enforce. Other agreements are casual promises between friends, relying only on trust and good faith.
When people are in agreement, they see things the same way. When they reach an agreement, they've worked through their differences to find common ground. Teachers might say “we have an agreement” when reminding students of classroom rules everyone accepted at the start of the year.
Notice that real agreement means everyone genuinely accepts the decision, not that someone was forced or pressured into going along. That's why reaching agreement sometimes takes patience, discussion, and compromise.
