Airiness is a quality of lightness, openness, and spaciousness. When an architect designs a house with high ceilings, large windows, and white walls, the rooms have an airy feeling that makes them pleasant to spend time in. When a dancer moves with airiness, their jumps and leaps look effortless and floating, as if gravity barely affects them.

The word often describes physical spaces or objects. An airy room feels bright and uncrowded, with plenty of breathing space. An airy fabric like chiffon or gauze is thin and delicate, letting light pass through it. Whipped cream has airiness because it's full of tiny bubbles that make it feel light on your tongue.

But airiness can also describe attitudes or behavior, usually in a less flattering way. When someone speaks with airiness about serious matters, they seem casual or indifferent about things they should take seriously. If a student responds with airiness when asked why they didn't complete their homework, they're acting as though it doesn't matter much, which probably won't impress their teacher. This kind of airiness suggests a lightweight approach to things that deserve more care and attention.
