alone
By yourself, without other people around you.
Alone means being by yourself, without other people around. When you're home alone after school, you're the only person in the house. When you work alone on a project, you complete it without partners or teammates.
Being alone isn't the same as being lonely. Someone can enjoy being alone with a good book or working on a hobby, feeling perfectly content. Loneliness is an unhappy feeling, while being alone is simply a state of being by yourself. Many people need time alone to think, create, or recharge after being around others all day.
The word can also describe uniqueness or being the only one. A scientist might be alone in believing a new theory before proving it correct. An explorer might be the first person to set foot on a remote island, standing alone where no human has stood before.
When we say someone accomplished something alone, we emphasize that they did it through their own effort and determination, without help. When someone says “you're not alone,” they mean others share your experience or feelings, even if you can't see them.
