alpha
First or most important, like an early test version.
Alpha means first or most important, coming from the first letter of the Greek alphabet. When scientists label things sequentially, they often start with alpha: the alpha version of a new app is the earliest test version, and in a wolf pack, people used to think the alpha wolf was the dominant leader (though this idea was based on research that scientists later found did not match how wild wolves actually live).
In finance, alpha measures how much better an investment performs compared to the overall market. If a fund manager achieves high alpha, they're beating the average by making choices that outperform what typical investors earn.
People sometimes call a confident, assertive person an alpha, though this usage oversimplifies how leadership actually works. The word captures the idea of being first, primary, or leading the way.
When you're working on the alpha version of your own project, whether it's a story, invention, or science experiment, you're in that exciting beginning stage where you're testing your ideas and figuring out what works.
