Ambiance is the overall mood or atmosphere of a place. It's that hard-to-pin-down feeling you get when you walk into a room: cozy and warm, or cold and unwelcoming, bright and energetic, or calm and peaceful.

Think about your favorite restaurant. The ambiance comes from everything working together: the lighting, the music playing softly in the background, how the tables are arranged, even the smell of food cooking. A restaurant might have dim lighting, soft jazz music, and candles on the tables to create a relaxed, elegant ambiance. A pizza place might have bright lights, upbeat music, and colorful decorations for a fun, casual ambiance.

The same space can have completely different ambiance at different times. Your classroom probably has a focused, quiet ambiance during a test, but a lively, energetic ambiance during a group project. A gym has an intense ambiance during a championship game but a relaxed ambiance during a casual practice.

The word is sometimes spelled ambience, which means exactly the same thing. People create ambiance intentionally: movie theaters keep the lights dim to help you focus on the screen, while stores might play upbeat music to make shopping feel more exciting.
