amenity
A helpful extra feature that makes a place more pleasant.
An amenity is a feature or service that makes a place more comfortable, convenient, or pleasant to use. When a hotel advertises its amenities, it's highlighting things like a swimming pool, free breakfast, or high-speed internet that make your stay more enjoyable. An apartment building might list amenities such as a fitness center, playground, or parking garage.
The word comes from the same root as “amiable,” meaning friendly or pleasant, and that connection helps explain what amenities do: they make places feel more welcoming and agreeable. A basic bedroom gives you somewhere to sleep, but amenities like good lighting, comfortable furniture, and a quiet location make it genuinely pleasant.
Schools have amenities too. A library is an amenity that makes learning easier. A well-equipped playground is an amenity that makes recess more fun. Air conditioning is an amenity that makes hot days more bearable.
Notice that amenities go beyond the bare minimum. A house needs walls and a roof, but a fireplace or a nice backyard is an amenity. Amenities are the extras that transform a functional space into somewhere you actually want to be. When people shop for homes, choose hotels, or pick neighborhoods, they often weigh which amenities matter most to them.
