An anesthesiologist is a medical doctor who specializes in keeping patients safe, comfortable, and pain-free during surgery. When someone needs an operation, the anesthesiologist administers medications called anesthetics that either make the patient completely unconscious or numb specific parts of their body so they don't feel pain.

This doctor has extensive responsibilities throughout the surgical process. Before surgery, the anesthesiologist reviews the patient's medical history and decides which medications will work best and safest for that particular person.
