angelfish
A flat, graceful fish with long, flowing fins.
An angelfish is a type of fish with a distinctive flat, disc-shaped body and long, flowing fins that sweep backward like graceful wings. The name comes from their appearance: when you see one gliding through the water, those elegant fins can look almost angelic.
There are two main types of angelfish. Freshwater angelfish live in the slow-moving rivers of South America, especially the Amazon, and are popular aquarium fish. They come in striking patterns of silver, black, and gold. Marine angelfish live in coral reefs in tropical oceans and are among the most colorful fish in the sea, displaying brilliant blues, yellows, and oranges. Both types have flat bodies that help them slip between plants or coral branches while searching for food.
In aquariums, angelfish can be surprisingly smart and aware. They often recognize the people who feed them and may even swim to the front of the tank when their owner approaches. Some angelfish can live for ten years or more with proper care, making them longtime companions for patient fishkeepers.
