anime
A style of Japanese animated shows and movies.
Anime is a style of animation that originated in Japan and has become popular worldwide. The word comes from the Japanese pronunciation of “animation,” but it refers specifically to Japanese animated shows and movies with distinctive artistic features: characters often have large, expressive eyes, colorful hair, and exaggerated facial expressions that show emotions clearly.
Anime covers every genre imaginable: action adventures, mysteries, comedies, science fiction, fantasy, sports stories, and slice-of-life tales about everyday experiences. Some anime series run for hundreds of episodes, following characters through years of adventures, while others tell complete stories in just a few episodes or a single film. Popular anime like My Neighbor Totoro, Pokémon, and Spirited Away have reached audiences far beyond Japan.
What sets anime apart from other animation styles is how it handles storytelling. Many anime series tackle complex themes and character development similar to live-action shows, rather than treating animation as something only for young children. The art style itself varies widely: some anime looks realistic and detailed, while other shows use simplified, cartoonish designs.
In Japan, anime is simply their word for all animation, but outside Japan, we use anime specifically for Japanese animation, to distinguish it from other animated styles like American cartoons or European animation.
