An ankylosaur is a type of dinosaur that lived millions of years ago, covered in thick armor plating and often sporting a massive club at the end of its tail. Picture a giant prehistoric tank on four sturdy legs, about the size of a large car or small truck, munching peacefully on plants while very well protected from many predators.

An ankylosaur's armor plates were actually fused directly to its skull and body. These bony plates, called osteoderms, covered the dinosaur's back, sides, and even its eyelids like natural chain mail. Some ankylosaurs had spikes jutting out along their sides for extra protection.

The most famous feature was the tail club, a massive chunk of solid bone that could swing with devastating force. Scientists believe ankylosaurs used these clubs to defend themselves against predators like Tyrannosaurus rex, delivering powerful blows to an attacking dinosaur's legs or ribs.

Ankylosaurs were herbivores, eating low-growing plants and shrubs. They lived during the Cretaceous Period, around 70 to 65 million years ago, before the extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs. Their fossils have been found across North America and Asia, and paleontologists continue discovering new species, each with slightly different armor patterns and body shapes.
