anonymity
The state of not having your name or identity known.
Anonymity is the state of being unknown or unidentified. When you have anonymity, people don't know who you are. An anonymous letter arrives without a signature or return address. An anonymous donation to a charity comes from someone who chooses not to reveal their name.
Sometimes anonymity protects people who need to speak up about something important without facing consequences. A witness might give an anonymous tip to police about a crime. A student might drop an anonymous note in a suggestion box about a problem at school. In these cases, anonymity creates safety for truth-telling.
But anonymity can also make people behave badly. When someone posts mean comments online anonymously, they might say cruel things they'd never say face-to-face. The shield of anonymity sometimes brings out the worst in people because they think they won't be held accountable.
Think of it like wearing a mask at a costume party: you're there, but nobody knows it's you. Whether anonymity helps or hurts depends on what someone chooses to do with it. A person who uses anonymity to expose corruption acts very differently from someone who uses it to bully others without getting caught.
