anxiety
A strong feeling of worry or nervousness about something uncertain.
Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. When you have anxiety about a big test, your mind keeps returning to thoughts like “What if I forget everything?” or “What if I fail?” Your stomach might feel fluttery, your hands might get sweaty, and you might have trouble concentrating on anything else.
Everyone experiences anxiety sometimes. You might feel anxious before performing in a school play, trying out for a sports team, or meeting new people. This kind of anxiety is normal and can even be helpful: it pushes you to prepare thoroughly and stay alert.
However, anxiety becomes a problem when it's so strong or frequent that it interferes with daily life. Some people experience anxiety disorders, where worries feel overwhelming even about ordinary situations. They might avoid activities they once enjoyed or struggle to sleep because anxious thoughts won't stop.
When someone feels anxious, they're experiencing this mix of worry and physical tension.
