apart
Separated from something or someone by distance or difference.
Apart means separated by distance or time, or into pieces. When two friends move to different cities, they live apart from each other. When you take a watch apart, you separate it into all its individual pieces, gears and springs spread across the table.
The word captures both physical and emotional distance. Best friends might drift apart over time if they stop spending time together, even if they still live in the same town. A family that lives continents apart might stay close through letters and video calls, while neighbors living next door could remain miles apart in friendship.
Apart often appears in the phrase set apart, meaning something stands out as special or different. An exceptionally kind student might be set apart from their classmates by their willingness to help others. A scientist's brilliant discovery sets her apart from other researchers in her field.
Notice how apart differs from a part: being apart means separation, while being a part of something means belonging to it. You can be a part of a team while standing apart from the crowd because of your unique skills. Spelling makes all the difference.
