apparatus
A set of parts or tools working together for something.
An apparatus is a complex tool, machine, or system of parts designed to do a specific job. In a science lab, you might use an apparatus made of beakers, tubes, and burners to conduct an experiment. Gymnasts perform routines on different pieces of apparatus like the parallel bars or balance beam. A fire truck carries firefighting apparatus: hoses, ladders, pumps, and other specialized equipment needed to fight fires.
The word emphasizes that multiple parts work together for a purpose. A single wrench isn't really an apparatus, but a whole set of tools organized in a toolbox might be called a mechanic's apparatus. Your school's PA system, with its microphones, speakers, and wiring throughout the building, forms an apparatus for making announcements.
You'll also hear apparatus used more broadly to describe organized systems: a government has an apparatus of departments and officials that make it function, though this usage is more common in formal or political contexts. The core idea remains the same: connected parts working together to accomplish something specific.
