appear
To become visible or come into sight.
To appear means to become visible or to come into view. When the sun appears on the horizon each morning, it rises into sight. When a friend appears at your door, they show up where you can see them. A rabbit might disappear into its burrow and then appear again a few moments later.
The word also means to seem or give the impression of being something. If storm clouds appear threatening, they look like they might bring serious weather. If a math problem appears difficult at first glance, it seems hard before you've worked through it. Someone might appear confident even when they feel nervous inside, and a book's cover might make it appear more exciting than it actually is.
In performances and media, appear means to take part or be featured. An actor appears in a movie. A musician appears on stage. A scientist might appear on a news program to explain a discovery.
Notice the difference between appearing to be something and actually being it. A task might appear impossible until you try it and discover you can do it. A person might appear unfriendly when they're really just shy. Things aren't always what they appear to be, which is why looking closer often reveals the truth.
