approachable
Friendly and easy for others to talk to.
To be approachable means to seem friendly and easy to talk to. An approachable teacher smiles when students ask questions and makes them feel comfortable admitting when they're confused. An approachable classmate doesn't act superior or intimidating, so others feel free to sit with them at lunch or ask to borrow a pencil.
The opposite of approachable is someone who seems cold, busy, or unwelcoming. They might not mean to be unfriendly, but something about their manner makes others hesitate to start a conversation. Maybe they never make eye contact, always seem rushed, or respond to questions impatiently.
Being approachable is partly about attitude and partly about the signals you send. A librarian who greets visitors with a warm “How can I help you?” is more approachable than one who sits scowling behind a desk. A new student who stands alone with crossed arms seems less approachable than one who's smiling and making friendly eye contact.
The word can also describe places and things. An approachable hiking trail is one that beginners can attempt without special equipment or training. An approachable book on astronomy explains complicated ideas in ways that regular readers can understand.
