aptitude
A natural talent that makes learning something easier for you.
Aptitude is a natural ability or talent for learning something. If you have an aptitude for mathematics, new math concepts click into place more easily for you than for most people. Someone with an aptitude for languages picks up foreign words and grammar patterns quickly, while another person might have an aptitude for music, hearing harmonies and rhythms that others miss.
Notice that aptitude isn't the same as achievement. You might have a strong aptitude for drawing but never develop it into real skill without practice. Or you might lack a natural aptitude for spelling but become an excellent speller through determined effort and memorization strategies. Aptitude gives you a head start, like having a tailwind when you're riding your bike, but it doesn't guarantee success.
Schools sometimes give aptitude tests to help identify what students might be naturally good at. These tests try to measure potential rather than what you've already learned. A mechanical aptitude test might show whether you'd pick up engineering concepts quickly, while a verbal aptitude test might indicate whether words and language come naturally to you.
Understanding your aptitudes helps you make smart choices about where to invest your energy, but remember: aptitude opens doors, while hard work helps you walk through them.
