archery
A sport and skill of shooting arrows with a bow.
Archery is the skill and sport of shooting arrows with a bow. An archer pulls back the bowstring, aims carefully at a target, and releases the arrow, sending it flying through the air toward a bullseye or other goal.
For thousands of years, archery was essential for hunting and warfare. Ancient armies used archers to fight battles, and families relied on bows and arrows to hunt deer, rabbits, and birds for food. The English longbow, the Turkish composite bow, and the Japanese yumi were all famous weapons that required years of practice to master.
Today, most people practice archery as a sport or hobby rather than for survival. Olympic archers compete to hit tiny targets from great distances, while recreational archers might shoot at 3D foam animals in the woods or at round targets at an archery range. Some people enjoy traditional archery with simple wooden bows, while others use modern compound bows with pulleys and sights.
Good archers develop steady hands, sharp focus, and patience. Unlike throwing a ball, you can't muscle an arrow to the target. You have to learn proper form, control your breathing, and stay calm under pressure. Many archers say the mental challenge is harder than the physical one.
