ark
A large boat or safe place that protects people or things.
An ark is a large boat or ship, especially one described as built to survive a catastrophic flood. The most famous ark appears in the biblical story of Noah, who built an enormous wooden vessel to save his family and pairs of many animal species from a great flood that covered the earth. According to the story, Noah spent years constructing this massive ark, following detailed instructions about its size and design, then gathered animals and supplies before the rains came.
Noah's ark was essentially a huge floating box designed to keep its passengers safe and dry. In museums today, you can see artists' interpretations of what Noah's ark might have looked like, often depicted as a very large vessel.
In a broader sense, an ark can mean any place of protection or refuge during dangerous times. When people say a library is an “ark of knowledge,” they mean it preserves and protects important information. The famous Ark of the Covenant from biblical history was a sacred chest (not a boat) that held the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, showing how the word connects to the idea of protecting something precious.
