article
A piece of writing in a newspaper, magazine, or website.
An article is a piece of writing on a specific topic, published in a newspaper, magazine, website, or journal. When you read about a new discovery in National Geographic or learn about yesterday's soccer game in the local paper, you're reading an article. Articles can be short (a few paragraphs about a school event) or long (an in-depth investigation that takes months to research and write).
Good articles don't just dump information on readers. They organize facts and ideas in a logical way, often starting with the most important points. A news article about a storm might begin with how many people lost power, then explain what caused the storm, then describe what officials are doing to help. A magazine article about dolphins might hook you with an amazing fact, then take you deeper into how these animals communicate and live.
The word also appears in grammar. A, an, and the are called articles because they come before nouns to specify what we're talking about. “The book” points to a specific book, while “a book” could mean any book.
In another context, an article can mean a separate section of a legal document or agreement. The Constitution of the United States has seven articles, each covering different aspects of how the government works. When someone refers to Article II of the Constitution, they're talking about the specific section that describes the powers of the President.
