artificial
Made by people instead of happening naturally.
Artificial means made by humans rather than occurring naturally. An artificial lake is one that people dug and filled with water, not one formed by natural processes over thousands of years. Artificial flowers are crafted from plastic or fabric, while real flowers grow from the earth.
Today it often suggests an imitation of something natural. Artificial light comes from lamps and bulbs rather than the sun. Artificial flavoring is created in laboratories to taste like strawberries or vanilla, even though it doesn't come from actual strawberries or vanilla beans.
Sometimes artificial carries a slightly negative feeling, suggesting something fake or inferior to the real thing. An artificial smile looks forced and insincere compared to a genuine expression of happiness. But artificial things can also be incredibly useful: artificial hearts keep people alive, and artificial intelligence helps doctors diagnose diseases.
The key is understanding that artificial doesn't automatically mean bad, just human-made. A beautiful artificial reef provides homes for fish just as effectively as a natural one. What matters is whether the artificial version serves its purpose well.
