ascension
The act of rising or moving up to a higher position.
Ascension means rising or moving upward, especially to a higher position or level of importance. When a prince ascends to become king after his father's death, we call this his ascension to the throne. When a talented athlete moves from the minor leagues to the majors, that's an ascension in their career.
The word carries a sense of moving upward with purpose or significance. It can describe both physical movement and advancement in status or achievement: a company executive's ascension to CEO describes their climb up the corporate ladder. A mountain climber's ascension of Mount Everest describes both the physical climb and the achievement of reaching such a challenging summit.
In Christian tradition, the Ascension (with a capital A) refers specifically to Jesus Christ rising into heaven after his resurrection. This event is celebrated as a holy day called Ascension Day.
The related verb is ascend. You might ascend a staircase, ascend to a leadership position, or watch a hot air balloon ascend into the sky. While you can use simpler words like “rise” or “climb,” ascension adds weight and importance to the upward movement, suggesting something meaningful or transformative about reaching that higher place.
