An aspen is a type of tree known for its smooth white bark and leaves that tremble in the slightest breeze. When wind passes through an aspen grove, the round leaves flutter and rustle, creating a shimmering effect and a gentle rattling sound that some people say sounds like whispering or applause.

Aspens grow throughout cooler regions of North America, often covering entire mountainsides. What makes them remarkable is how they grow: many aspen trees in a grove are actually connected underground by a shared root system, making them technically one giant organism. A grove in Utah called Pando is considered one of the largest living things on Earth, with about 47,000 tree trunks all sharing the same roots.

In autumn, aspen leaves turn brilliant gold, creating spectacular displays across mountain landscapes. The trees grow quickly and are often among the first to appear after forest fires, their bright trunks standing out against the blackened ground. Artists and photographers prize aspens for their striking appearance, and many mountain towns and ski resorts are named after them.
