assist
To help someone do something or reach a goal.
To assist means to help someone accomplish a task or goal. When you assist your little brother with his homework, you're helping him understand the problems. When a librarian assists you in finding a book, she's guiding you to the right shelf.
The word suggests active, purposeful help rather than just being nearby. If you hold the door open while your mom carries in groceries, you're assisting her. If you pass tools to your dad while he fixes the sink, you're acting as his assistant.
In basketball, an assist happens when you pass the ball to a teammate who then scores. You didn't make the basket yourself, but you directly helped make it happen. This captures what assistance really is: contributing to someone else's success.
Teachers often have teaching assistants who help run the classroom. Doctors work with medical assistants. The word can also be a noun: “Thank you for your assistance” means “Thank you for your help.” Notice that assisting usually means working alongside someone toward their goal, not doing everything for them. Good assistance makes people more capable, not less.
