astonish
To greatly surprise someone so much that they feel shocked.
To astonish someone means to surprise them so completely that they're left almost speechless, their eyes wide and their mind racing to make sense of what just happened. It's stronger than simply surprising someone: astonishment hits you like a thunderclap, leaving you momentarily stunned.
When a magician makes an elephant disappear on stage, the audience sits astonished, unable to explain what their own eyes just witnessed. When scientists discovered that the universe is expanding, astronomers around the world were astonished by this revelation about reality itself. A teacher might be astonished when a struggling student suddenly solves a difficult problem that stumped everyone else.
True astonishment feels like being struck by lightning, leaving you dazed and amazed. It's the difference between “oh, that's neat” and “wait, what? How is that even possible?”
Notice that astonishment can be positive or negative: you might be astonished by a friend's incredible art project or astonished by how messy their room became in just one day. Either way, you're experiencing something that completely defied your expectations.
