atheist
A person who does not believe any gods are real.
An atheist is someone who does not believe that God or gods exist. While many people believe in a divine creator or higher power, atheists conclude that there isn't sufficient evidence for such beliefs.
Different atheists arrive at this position in different ways. Some grow up without religious teaching and simply never develop religious beliefs. Others study various religions and philosophical arguments but remain unconvinced. Still others might lose faith they once had after wrestling with difficult questions about suffering, justice, or the nature of the universe.
Being an atheist tells you what someone doesn't believe, but it doesn't tell you much about what they do believe or how they live. Atheists might find meaning and purpose through relationships, work, creativity, helping others, or pursuing knowledge. They may rely on science, reason, and human experience to understand the world.
It's worth noting that atheism is different from agnosticism. An agnostic says “I don't know whether God exists,” while an atheist says “I don't believe God exists.” Some people use both labels, calling themselves agnostic atheists.
Throughout history and across cultures today, most people have held religious beliefs of some kind, making atheists a minority in most societies. In America, which was founded on principles of religious freedom, people have the right to believe or not believe as their conscience guides them.
