In ancient Greek competitions, people ran races, threw javelins, and wrestled. Today, athletics includes everything from running sprints to playing team sports to competing in the Olympics. When someone shows athletic ability, they move with coordination, power, and grace, whether they're catching a football, doing a cartwheel, or racing to first base.
Track and field events are sometimes called athletics in many countries, especially outside the United States. These include running races, jumping events like the high jump and long jump, and throwing events like shot put and discus.
