To be awake means to be conscious and alert rather than asleep. When you wake up in the morning, you transition from sleeping to being awake. Your eyes open, your mind starts working, and you become aware of the world around you.
The word also describes a state of being mentally alert and attentive. A student who is wide awake in class notices everything the teacher says and participates actively. Someone who feels drowsy during an afternoon lecture might struggle to stay awake, fighting the urge to nod off.
Beyond the literal meaning, awake can describe being aware of or sensitive to something important. When people become awake to an injustice happening around them, they start noticing and understanding it clearly for the first time. A scientist might suddenly become awake to a pattern in their data that reveals something significant.
The opposite of awake is asleep, but there are degrees: you might be barely awake and groggy, or you might be completely awake and energized. Some people are naturally more awake and alert in the morning, while others don't feel fully awake until later in the day. Being awake means your mind is engaged and ready to take in the world, with your eyes open and your attention active.
