baboon
A large, smart monkey from Africa that lives in big groups.
A baboon is a large, powerful monkey that lives in Africa and Arabia. Baboons have dog-like snouts, sharp teeth, and thick fur that can be olive, yellow, or even silvery gray depending on the species. They're among the biggest monkeys in the world: a male baboon can weigh as much as 90 pounds and stand about two feet tall on all fours.
Baboons live in groups called troops that can include dozens or even hundreds of individuals. These troops have complex social structures, with clear hierarchies and strong bonds between members. They're remarkably intelligent animals that use over 30 different vocalizations to communicate, from barks and grunts to screams. They're also clever problem-solvers who can learn to work together to get food or defend against predators like leopards and lions.
Unlike many monkeys that live in trees, baboons spend most of their time on the ground, walking on all fours across savannas, woodlands, and rocky hills. They're omnivores who eat fruits, seeds, insects, and sometimes small animals. At night, they retreat to trees or cliff faces to sleep safely away from predators.
The word baboon is sometimes used as an insult to call someone clumsy or foolish, but that doesn't reflect how adaptable and intelligent these animals actually are.
